DS Automobiles, a partner of Chantilly Arts & Elegance since its inception in 2014, is preparing to unveil SM TRIBUTE at the tenth anniversary of the Concours d’Elegance held in the French gardens of Château de Chantilly.
SM TRIBUTE, which will be located in an area of 120 square meters next to an original SM, will make its debut at the Concours d’Elegance this year.
Visitors can also take a closer look at a four-door SM OPERA, an SM MYLORD cabriolet, an SM racing car that participated in the 1974 Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours, an SM PROTO displayed in the 2023 Rétromobile and other SMs in different colors that are part of the Euro SM Club. will have the opportunity to examine or rediscover.
Designed with inspiration from SM TRIBUTE brand heritage
In the spring of 2020, DS Automobiles shared a series of sketches on its social networks under the name #SM2020. These drawings, which emerged as a result of a design competition held among DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS designers, enabled the reinterpretation of the magnificent SM model, which was introduced to the market in 1970.
The DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS design team regularly works towards the heritage of the historic DS Automobiles models DS and SM through sketches that reveal their creativity and nourish their thinking skills.
More than just a tribute, SM TRIBUTE celebrates 10 years of artistry and elegance since DS Automobiles’ founding and initial involvement with Chantilly Arts & Elegance. In addition, SM TRIBUTE also contributes to the future research of DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS.
1970s avant-garde design comes to life again
The DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS team came up with a design imagining the SM model continuing to evolve over the last 50 years. Produced in the early 1970s, the SM represented the cutting edge of French automotive innovation.
This DS Automobiles model was a Grand Tourer that really focused on the technological advances of the period. The streamlined style designed by Robert Opron gave life to a design that was both elegant and avant-garde. The powerful V6 engine under the hood enabled SM to deliver outstanding road performance.
But what made the SM a truly remarkable car was its hydropneumatic suspension inherited from the DS. These suspensions gave the car unrivaled ride comfort and exemplary handling. The SM remains a cult DS Automobiles model sought after by collectors around the world today. This DS Automobiles model, where comfort, performance and innovation come together in a unique way, is a true automotive legend.
What helped SM create such an impact was its luxurious and meticulously designed interior. SM’s high-quality materials, sharp lines and carefully planned ergonomics create an extremely elegant atmosphere inside the car.
The instrument panel, which stands out with its circular indicators and unique steering wheel, offers both functional and aesthetic elements together. SM; It was very well equipped for the time it was released, with electric seats, air conditioning and power steering. In addition to having a dynamic character, it was a car that could offer first-class comfort to its passengers.
SM TRIBUTE carries the signature of the past to the present!
The appearance expressing dynamism and efficiency is also reflected in the slim but strong silhouette of SM TRIBUTE. This stands out as a design dominated by an iconic front end and a long hood, which most strongly characterize the relationship with the past.
The extended two-tone look is a reinterpretation of the Gold Leaf color featured in the SM brochure in 1971, combined with hand-aged satin varnish and a specially colored black tone.
The SM did not have a distinctive upper grille. The SM TRIBUTE replaced this with a very large glass section that exposed the headlight modules and license plate. Fifty years later, this glass section was transformed into a 3D screen, framed by a unique lighting consisting of three modules on each side and giving light to its middle part.
SM TRIBUTE’s profile view follows the airflow from the front to the narrower rear and continues to maintain SM’s characteristic lines. Behind the two large panes of glass, the rear panel splits in two, giving the rear end an S-shape that projects upwards. Naturally, the rear wheels are partially covered by removable parts.
While SM’s iconic proportions are preserved with a length of 4.94 m (+ 5 cm) and a height of 1.34 m (+ 2 cm), SM TRIBUTE presents a particularly solid and powerful appearance with a width of 1.98 m (+ 14 cm). . As a result of the search for efficiency, ground clearance changes to 12 centimeters (-3.5 cm). SM TRIBUTE is equipped with large 22-inch wheels decorated with aerodynamic inserts.
In the interior, the style of the 1970 model SM is maintained.
