ICS CERT experts discovered critical vulnerabilities in Unisoc SoCs that could allow security measures to be bypassed and unauthorized remote access to be gained.

The high-severity vulnerabilities, named CVE-2024-39432 and CVE-2024-39431, are a series of vulnerabilities commonly used on devices in regions such as Asia, Africa and Latin America. Unisoc affects the system on chip (SoC). This threat covers smartphones, tablets, connected vehicles and telecommunications systems.

Thanks to their research, ICS CERT experts showed that attackers can bypass the security mechanisms in the operating system running on the application processor, directly access the kernel, run unauthorized code with system-level privileges and change system files.

Unisoc

The team observed a variety of attack vectors, including techniques that manipulate the device’s Direct Memory Access (DMA) peripherals (components that manage data transfers) and allow hackers to bypass key protections such as the Memory Protection Unit (MPU).

These methods are similar to tactics seen in the Operation Triangulation APT campaign uncovered by security experts and show that real attackers may use similar tactics. However, due to their complexity, such attack techniques have the potential to be used by attackers with advanced technical skills and extensive resources.

The widespread use of Unisoc chipsets increases the potential impact of uncovered vulnerabilities in both consumer and industrial environments. This has the possibility of causing serious security issues and disrupting operational integrity through remote code execution in critical sectors such as automotive or telecommunications.

Once notified of the vulnerabilities, Unisoc demonstrated exceptional responsiveness by quickly developing and releasing patches to address the identified issues. This swift action underlines Unisoc’s commitment to reducing potential risks and ensuring the safety of its products.

ICS CERT urges device manufacturers and users to install these updates immediately to reduce cyber risks. However, due to the complex nature of hardware architectures, there may be certain limitations that cannot be completely resolved by software updates alone. Therefore, it would be appropriate to adopt a multi-layered security approach, covering both software patches and additional security measures, as a proactive measure.

In comparison, the M3 Max chip in Apple’s 2023 MacBook Pro could reach approximately 3,000 points in a single core and 21,000 points in a multi-core. These results reveal that the M4 Pro chip offers a significant improvement over the previous generation, not only in single-core performance but also in multi-core usage.

According to the Geekbench listing, this new MacBook Pro model (Mac16,7) with M4 Pro chip has a 14-core CPU running at 4.51 GHz and 48 GB combined memory (RAM). This shows that it provides stronger multitasking and workload management as well as performance.
