The Apple Car, or Titan project, was shelved in recent months. But new information about autonomous vehicles continues to come. Without further ado, let’s take a look at what Apple has done…
Apple Carhas been canceled since February 2024. 10 billion dollars were spent on this project over 10 years. The details of such a big project were wondered. According to Bloomberg, Chinese automotive company BYD collaborated with Apple and worked on the battery of the autonomous vehicle. Despite BYD’s years of work, Apple abandoned the partnership to look for other options.
BYD has a battery technology called Blade. Thanks to the success of the Blade system, BYD became China’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer. The company even managed to surpass Tesla for a short time and become the company that sells the most electric vehicles worldwide. When Apple engineers showed Blade to Apple management, the Cupertino company was interested in BYD.
The Titan project has a dramatic long story with delays, management changes, disruptions in the autonomous driving system and many other reasons. Alexander Hitzinger, an executive at Volkswagen and Porsche, oversaw the design of the autonomous car from 2016 to 2019 and managed a large team. Engineer Mujeeb Ijaz, who is responsible for battery technology, also took part in the Titan project from 2014 to 2020, along with a team of 50 engineers.
Apple may have abandoned its years-long Apple Car project, but it has learned a lot about robotics, artificial intelligence, battery technology and other systems thanks to the billions of dollars it has spent on research. There are claims that Apple will release a smart home device consisting of a screen connected to a robotic arm. This device may be the first concrete evidence of what was learned in the Titan project.

Stellantis, introduced STLA Frame, designed for full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs. STLA Frame, the company’s 3rd all-new versatile platform, supports internal combustion, hybrid, hydrogen, BEV and REEV technologies.
Stellantis introduced STLA Frame, a battery electric vehicle (BEV)-specific, multi-energy platform designed for full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs, a critical segment in North America and select global markets.
STLA Frame, Stellantis’ all-new 3rd multi-energy platform, prioritizes capability, practicality and performance for full-size pickup truck and SUV users who demand uncompromising power and durability.
610 mm water crossings will no longer be a problem!
STLA The Frame platform is designed to provide a maximum towing capacity of 6,350 kilograms and a payload capacity of 1,224 kilograms, while offering a best-in-class range of up to 1,100 kilometers in range-extending electric vehicles (REEV) and 800 kilometers in BEV.
Additionally, the platform supports up to 610 mm of water passage, responding to harsh environments and various usage conditions. STLA Frame, which is planned to be used in Stellantis full-size pick-up pickup trucks, light commercial vehicles and SUV type vehicles, will initially be offered with an innovative powertrain system, including full BEV and REEV configuration.
STLA Frame will also accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and hydrogen propulsion systems in the future. Combining a battery, front and rear electric powertrain modules (EDMs), integrated generator and internal combustion engine, the REEV system allows drivers to carry or tow heavy loads over long distances without range anxiety.
Since there is no direct mechanical connection from the engine to the wheels, the generator provides energy to the EDMs, propelling the vehicle and charging the battery when necessary. Thus, while extending the range under heavy use, it also benefits from the torque of the electric motors, which takes the dynamics of the vehicle to new heights.
Innovative design for power and efficiency!
Manufactured using advanced, high-strength steel, STLA Frame provides greater durability and strength with less weight.
While the expanded middle section houses the battery set, there are reinforced frame rails that protect the battery in case of a possible side impact. Full-length underbody fairing reduces aerodynamic drag to help maximize driving range and reflects Stellantis’ commitment to efficiency without sacrificing performance.
The platform is designed for a BEV range of up to 800 kilometers and a REEV range of up to 1,100 kilometers. It contains liquid-cooled battery packs ranging from 159 to 200 kWh.
It is also designed to adapt to future energy storage technologies, providing adaptability for many years to come. By designing and installing front and rear EDMs to 250 kW, Stellantis offers four-wheel drive capability and can accelerate a vehicle from 0 to approximately 96 km/h in 4.4 seconds.
Flexible suspension designs, including air suspension, offer a ride optimized for a variety of driving conditions and loading scenarios. The basic STLA Frame enables production of:
- Length range: 5.488-5.941 mm
- Width range: 2.062-2.124 mm
- Wheelbase range: 3,143-3,690 mm
- Ground clearance range: 168-262 mm
- Maximum tire diameter: 834/838 mm
Range of 160 kilometers in 10 minutes!
The new STLA Frame supports fast charging. While the BEV solution provides an additional range of approximately 160 km in just 10 minutes with 800 volt DC fast charging up to 350 kW, REEV can reach a range of up to approximately 80 km in 10 minutes with 400 volt DC fast charging up to 175 kW.
Vehicles built with STLA Frame feature bi-directional charging, which allows the vehicle’s battery to charge another EV, power a home in an emergency, or feed energy back into the grid. The STLA Frame platform is one of four global BEV platforms at the center of the Stellantis Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. STLA Medium was launched in July 2023 and STLA Large in January 2024, thus enabling Stellantis to offer the right solutions to its customers based on different electrification scenarios.
All of Stellantis’ global platforms are designed and engineered for long lifespans, with battery cell chemistry, EDMs, power inverters and software control interchangeable.
To achieve its ambitious targets, Stellantis will invest more than 50 billion euros in the electric transition by 2030. The company aims to achieve a 100 percent passenger car battery electric vehicle sales mix in Europe and a 50 percent passenger car and light commercial vehicle battery electric vehicle sales mix in the United States.
