Approximately a quarter of the world’s population will go to the polls in 2024. Concerns are growing that disinformation and AI-powered fraud could be used to influence election results. Experts fear the consequences of deepfake samples becoming widespread.

Approximately two billion voters will go to polling stations this year to vote for their preferred representatives and political leaders.

This has the potential to change the political landscape and direction of geopolitics over the next few years and beyond, as important elections (including to the European Parliament) will be held in a number of countries, including the US, UK and India.

As fake images, audio and video clips of real people become more common, the possibility of AI-powered disinformation is causing increasing concern.

Fake news has dominated election-related headlines since it became a major story during the White House race in 2016.

Eight years from now, there is arguably a greater threat; A combination of disinformation and deepfakes that can fool even experts.

Recent examples of AI-generated election-themed content, including a series of images and videos circulated ahead of the election in Argentina and a doctored audio recording of US President Joe Biden, are likely to be a harbinger of things to come on a larger scale.

deepfake

World Economic Forum drew attention to the risk

Misinformation and disinformation were determined by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as the most important global risk of the coming period.

The problem with deepfakes is that the AI-powered technology has now become cheap, accessible and powerful enough to cause harm on a large scale.

This increases the ability of cybercriminals, malicious political actors, and hacktivists to launch persuasive disinformation campaigns and more temporary, one-off scams.

According to the WEF report, synthetic content will manipulate individuals, harm economies and disintegrate societies in various ways over the next two years.

A key challenge is that tools such as ChatGPT and easily accessible generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will enable a wider range of individuals to participate in the creation of disinformation campaigns driven by deepfake technology.

In an election process deepfake, can be used to undermine voters’ confidence in a particular candidate. If supporters of a political party or candidate can be properly manipulated through fake audio or video, it will be a win for rival groups.

At the heart of this challenge is a simple truth: People tend to value quantity and ease of understanding when processing information. The more content we see with a similar message and the easier it is to understand, the more likely we are to believe it.

Add to this the fact that deepfakes are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from real content, and you have a recipe for potential democratic disaster.

deepfake

What are technology companies doing about this?

Both YouTube and Facebook are said to have been slow to respond to some deepfakes aimed at influencing a recent election.

This is despite a new EU law (Digital Services Act) that requires social media companies to block attempts at election manipulation.

OpenAI, on the other hand, announced that it will apply the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) digital credentials for images produced by DALL-E 3. Cryptographic watermark technology, also tried by Meta and Google, is designed to make it harder to fake images.

But these are still baby steps, and as election fever grips the world, there are legitimate concerns that technological response to the threat will be too little, too late. Fake audio or video will be difficult to quickly track down and debunk, especially when spread in relatively closed networks such as WhatsApp groups or robocalls.

The Cupertino-based company has not changed its stance on this issue.

Mac Marketing Manager Evan Buyze defended 8 GB RAM in Macs in an interview with IT Home. According to Buyze, 8 GB of RAM in entry-level Macs is sufficient for the routine work most users do on the computer. Buyze cited internet surfing, watching videos, listening to music, and general daily use as examples. Last year, another Apple executive stated that M series processors can use the RAM in Macs efficiently and that 8 GB RAM performs well in daily tasks.

In fact, Evan Buyze’s interview focuses on the recently released MacBook Air with M3. His statements may be true for the Air family. For daily tasks, 8 GB RAM may also be sufficient. However, things change in premium model computers, namely MacBook Pros. Pros are used for high-level work. 8 GB RAM is not enough, especially for software developers, video editors, and photo editors. We will see what Apple will do with M4 processor-based Macs at the end of the year.
