The One Millionth Opel with the Made in Eisenach Label Turns 25 Years Old

Opel rolled off its 1 millionth vehicle, an important milestone for itself, in Eisenach in November 1999. This landmark vehicle was a black “Opel Corsa B Edition 100” and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary of production.

Opel is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Opel Corsa B Edition 100, which is an important milestone for the automotive world and brand history. The brand with the lightning bolt logo, which has been producing for more than 30 years in the city of Eisenach, whose name is associated with automotive production, was among the first companies to invest in the new federal states in 1990, when Germany was reunified.

Opel, which has achieved countless successes with the “Made in Eisenach” label since then, rolled off the black Opel Corsa B Edition 100 model, the one millionth vehicle produced in its factory in Thuringia State, in November 1999.

Eisenach

Five basic principles brought great success!

After the fall of the Berlin Wall opel authorities immediately recognized the potential offered by the traditional automotive industry in Eisenach and took action. As early as March 1990, Opel supported the economic development of the State of Thuringia by establishing the company Opel-AWE-Planungs-GmbH with Automobilwerk Eisenach (AWE). Just two days after the official reunification of Germany, on October 5, 1990, the first Opel Vectra rolled off the production line at the AWE plant.

In February 1991, the foundations of the new factory were laid in Eisenach. After a construction period lasting only 19 months and a total investment of approximately one billion Deutschmarks, the new Eisenach plant started production of the Opel Astra in September 1992. This success was followed by the first Opel Corsa with the “Made in Germany” label rolling off the line on June 3, 1993.

Eisenach

Opel production in Eisenach has increased greatly since then. Due to high demand, production in the first half of the 1990s focused on the Corsa, the popular small car of the time. The Corsa attracted such great interest that just nine years after the start of car production at the plant and just six years after the first Corsa was built in Eisenach, the one millionth Opel built there rolled off the production line.

Exactly 10 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1999, a 65 horsepower (48 kW) black Corsa “Edition” model rolled off the final assembly line in Thuringia to its buyer in Regensburg, Bavaria.

The factory in Eisenach saw successful developments from the very beginning. The factory quickly set standards in terms of environmental compliance, manufacturing technology and production systems. The factory benefited from five basic principles; Short production times thanks to employee involvement, continuous development, quality assurance from the very beginning, standardization and perfectly organized logistics.

As a result, the factory has been named Europe’s most modern and most efficient automobile production facility many times. In 2012, Opel ADAM joined Astra and Corsa. Following the comprehensive modernization of the facilities in 2019, the factory started producing only the Opel Grandland model.

Eisenach

Eisenach is becoming an “electric factory”!

The new Opel Grandland, which had its world premiere at the plant in Eisenach earlier this year, is now also produced here.

Significant changes and adaptations were made to the facility prior to production. New Grandland; It stands out as the German manufacturer’s first model, based on the STLA Medium platform developed for ultra-modern, electric vehicles, with a battery capacity of approximately 74 kWh and enabling an emission-free range of 504 kilometers (WLTP) and an urban range of approximately 623 km.

Opel invested 130 million Euros in the Eisenach factory to make it ready for the production of electric models and created a real example of an “electric factory” with various improvements. Significant changes were made in the production process with modifications made in many areas, from the body shop to the final assembly department. Additionally, the entire conveyor system was made compatible.

Eisenach

The body shop was fully automated and state-of-the-art camera systems were installed in various areas for detailed inspection. A new battery workshop was also established to assemble Grandland Elektrik’s battery packs. Special training was given to high voltage experts for this task.

In addition, plans to install a solar panel farm to supply “green” energy to the facility in Eisenach fit well with the new, electric Opel Grandland and its battery mounting structure.

Gradually switching to renewable energies with this method helps the facility to sustainably position itself for the future, enabling it to continue its success story.

Audi A5 Moved Up Class With Its Completely Renewed Infrastructure

Audi introduced the New Audi A5 model family, developed on the basis of Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) and equipped with powerful and partially electric diesel and gasoline engines with new MHEV plus technology.

In parallel with expanding its model range starting from 2024, Audi restructured the naming of the models so that even numbers represent electric models and odd numbers represent internal combustion engine vehicles.

With the introduction of the new generation, the Audi A4, which has been one of the best-selling models for many years, is being replaced by the Audi A5.

The model, which will be produced in Neckarsulm, is offered in four new variants: A5 Sedan and S5 Sedan, A5 Avant and S5 Avant. These variants are the first models to be launched on the newly developed infrastructure, Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).

Audi A5

Approaching the upper segment, A5 also moves its users up a notch.

Sedan and Avant models have the same vehicle dimensions with a length of 4,829 mm. This length positions them firmly in the upper mid-range segments. A4Compared to , the length of the new models has increased by 67 mm.

The long wheelbase of 2,892 millimeters and short overhangs reflect premium proportions. This contributes to long-distance ride quality and spacious interior.

At the same time, Audi is improving the key features of the new A5. Many features that are most preferred by Audi customers, such as the navigation system, the electrically opening and closing trunk lid, and the wireless charging compartment with inductive charging feature, are now offered as standard.

Audi A5

A New Technology: MHEV Plus

Engines in the new MHEV plus technology; The 48 volt mild hybrid system is equipped with a lithium iron phosphate battery. The MHEV plus system takes the performance and efficiency of the new Audi A5 TDI and Audi S5 models to a new level.

While the systems offer a dynamic drive with additional electric power (up to 18 kW/24 hp) on rural roads, they also provide fully electric driving during stop-start in urban traffic. During deceleration, the drive generator returns energy to the battery with up to 25 kW of regenerative braking.

The MHEV plus system offers many advantages in urban traffic. On the one hand, electrical support to the internal combustion engine significantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in slow driving, while on the other hand, the stored energy provides electricity to high-power systems even when the internal combustion engine is disabled (for example, at traffic lights).

At a sufficient charge level, the electrically powered air conditioning compressor continues to keep the interior at a comfortable temperature even when the internal combustion engine is not engaged.

Audi A5

Perfect and dynamic driving pleasure with more dynamic chassis and steering design

For a driving experience true to Audi DNA, not only the drive but also the chassis is a decisive factor. When developing the new Audi A5 and S5 models, brand-specific driving characteristics were one of the top technical priorities. These features include effortless and precise driving. While developing the new Audi A5, emphasis was placed on making it impressive and comfortable with its dynamic and agile handling. To achieve this, Audi revised the chassis with a number of detailed improvements. For example, the steering assembly was mounted directly to the body by reducing the connection materials in between, thus increasing the driving feel. As a result, the driver receives clear feedback about the conditions on the road in every situation.

In corners, the Audi A5 family offers a more agile ride thanks to stiffer connection and stabilization at the rear axle. The integrated brake control system rapidly increases the brake pressure with dynamic brake torque distribution and supports dynamic cornering with targeted braking interventions on the inner wheels in bends.

The new Audi A5 is produced with dynamically tuned steel suspension as standard. Optionally, the S sport suspension (standard on the Audi S5) and the S Sport suspension with damping control are also available. Both optional versions lower the body by 20 millimeters.

The optional S sports suspension with damping control offers a significantly wider range of driving modes that can be selected from the Audi drive select dynamic driving system. The dynamic mode is set to be noticeably firmer and more dynamic, while the comfort mode offers a more comfortable ride.

Audi A5

New standards in digital lighting

In the class of new A5 models, Audi reinforces its leading role in lighting design and technology. The Audi A5 family offers optional digital, customizable LED daytime running lights at the front and second-generation digital OLED taillights at the rear.

With approximately 60 segments per digital OLED panel, it begins to function as a screen on the back of the A5. This enables vehicle-to-vehicle communication and improves safety on the roads. This includes, for example, the new communication light that warns other vehicles with a specific light symbol within the digital light signature during automatic parking or in the event of an accident or danger.

Dynamic light effects when locking and leaving the vehicle reflect the aesthetics of movement, part of Audi’s DNA. The same goes for the active digital light signature, which moves the light in the headlights and taillights in a way never seen before. The headlights and taillights are three-dimensionally designed and offer optional digital light signatures, thus bringing the physical and digital worlds together.
