Many drivers around the world wonder how long electric car batteries last. Underlying this curiosity, of course, is the cost of battery replacement, which can run into thousands of dollars. A study conducted by Recurrent, a US-based electric car analytics firm, however, removes the great curiosity about electric car batteries. And we can already say that batteries last longer than thought.

Recurrent analyzed real-world data from 15,000 electric vehicles of various makes and models. As these vehicles traveled across the US, Recurrent collected a large data set, collecting daily readings of charging activity, battery percentage and estimated range.

How long do electric car batteries last?

The investigations found that only 1.5 percent of the 15,000 vehicles had their batteries replaced. “Because so few have been replaced so far, electric vehicle batteries appear to last much longer than anyone imagined,” the study said. The models with the highest normal replacement rates were the Nissan Leaf (around 5%) and Tesla Model S (less than 5%). These are also some of the oldest models included in the study.

Electric vehicles typically come with a standard battery warranty of eight to 12 years and a set mileage range. Recurrent found that most drivers do not replace their batteries even after these warranties expire.

According to the graph above, the oldest models in the study, those that have been on the road for nine to 12 years, have the highest percentage of battery replacements at around 5% (periods/vehicles shown in blue can be ignored as they have experienced battery-related recalls). According to Progressive, the average lifespan of internal combustion cars in the US is twelve years. Electric car manufacturers say an electric vehicle should last 15 to 20 years.

This means that battery replacement will not come as an unfortunate surprise just a few years after ownership.

Are electric cars losing range over time?

Batteries become less efficient at storing and distributing energy over time, leading to less range. How steep this decline is depends on the driver’s habits and weather conditions, among countless other factors specific to each vehicle. Battery technology also plays a role.

Let us examine this situation with a few examples.

Nissan LEAF

The Nissan LEAF is one of the oldest mass-produced electric vehicles still on the road, and proportionally the vehicle that has seen the most battery replacements. However, most of the replacements for early LEAFs were paid for by Nissan after they found that the original battery chemistry was losing charge quickly in hot environments. However, they quickly switched to a more satisfying battery that has been a great success. The graph above shows the battery’s range over time. It can be seen that it is quite stable.

Tesla Model S

Tesla’s Model S is also one of the oldest electric cars on the market. Although the degradation curve of the 100 kWh Model S perfectly matches the beginning of the idealized battery degradation curve, the same does not seem to be true for the Model S with a smaller battery pack. Interestingly, the decline over time is greater for the Model S 100 kWh pack.

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 has been on the road since 2018 and also shows a classic drop in projected range for the first 32,000 km, after which the trend stabilizes. At the end of 160,000 km, the Model 3’s 82 kWh package shows a drop in range of around 8.5 percent.

BMW i3

Despite the smaller battery packs and their relatively low range by modern standards, the old BMW i3 battery packs are still in good shape. The smallest, a 22 kWh pack, was launched in the US in 2014. The 33 kWh packs were launched in 2017. Both have covered an average of 160,000 km, retaining around 80% of their original capacity.

Current models: Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E have attracted a lot of attention despite being new models in the electric vehicle world. Since they are new models, there is no long-term data for now, but the graphs look quite positive. Moreover, it should be noted that these vehicles come with free fast charging. Although some say that fast charging damages the batteries, it is very difficult to make such an inference from these graphs.

What do the companies’ official warranties say about the batteries?

One way to get an idea of the expected lifespan of electric car batteries is to look at how much of a warranty the manufacturers offer for them. Electric car warranties are very similar to other car warranties, but the battery part is not included. Because the battery is so important, it’s important to make sure you read the specific warranty carefully.

Speaking for the US, the standard warranty is 8 years or 160,000 km. Let’s give examples again:

  • Tesla: 8 years and 160,000 km warranty for Model 3, 8 years and 193,000 km warranty for Model Y, 8 years and 240,000 km warranty for Model S and X. Tesla says that at the end of this period or range, 70 percent of the battery’s capacity will be preserved.
  • Hyundai: Starting in 2020, the battery is guaranteed to retain 70% of its capacity for 10 years or 160,000 km.
  • BMW: Guarantees 70% original capacity for 8 years or 160,000 km.
  • VW: Similarly guarantees 70% original capacity for 8 years or 160,000 km.

How to maintain battery health?

Although research on ways to keep lithium-ion batteries healthy comes from laboratory experiments, the principles generally apply to the larger packs used in cars. Batteries produce energy through a chemical reaction. Because chemical reactions take place in a physical cell, unwanted or waste reactions also occur. This is inevitable and does not necessarily mean that there is a problem with the battery. Some of these side reactions can even help the battery last longer if other conditions are right. In general, however, it is important to pay attention to the following points for battery health.

1. Avoid high temperatures

As Nissan’s first electric LEAF taught us, batteries don’t like hot environments. Keeping batteries cool (almost all modern vehicles have active coolant) prolongs life. For example, parking the car in the shade on very hot days or cooling the car before charging can help.

2. Avoid continuous fast charging

Charging a battery is a physical process that moves lithium ions and electrons inside the cells. At faster charging rates, the physical processes occur more vigorously and can create more physical stress or micro-damage to the battery materials. Although fast charging has not been conclusively established to be harmful, it may be beneficial to avoid using fast charging when it is not necessary.

3. Do not charge at low or high percentages

As tests on lithium-ion batteries have shown, it is important when you charge your car battery. The less the depth of discharge, the longer the battery life. In short, charging your car battery when it is below 50 percent is the best scenario in terms of battery life. If possible, the 30 percent band is the best charging range.
