HarmonyOS operating system has made significant progress in the Chinese smartphone market, becoming a strong challenger to Android’s long-standing dominance.

According to data published by TechInsights, in the third quarter of 2024, HarmonyOS’s market share increased from 13% to 15%, while Android’s share decreased from 72% to 70%. This change points to a remarkable competition between HarmonyOS, Android and iOS in the Chinese market.

HarmonyOS

HarmonyOS’s growth can be attributed to several factors. First of all, after the US sanctions, Huawei took great steps towards developing its own operating system by investing in independent technologies. Operating system as an independent operating system from Android applications positioning increased Huawei’s self-sufficiency capacity. Additionally, HarmonyOS offers an ecosystem that includes local versions of applications such as WeChat, which is popular in China, increasing its appeal for users.

HarmonyOS

While Apple’s iOS continues to have a stable market share of 15%, the fierce competition of the major players in the Chinese market is remarkable. Vivo leads the market with 19%, while Xiaomi and Oppo/OnePlus follow with 15.5% market share. After these three, Honor, Huawei and Apple compete strongly with 15% market share. Although this concentration of the market makes competition difficult for smaller brands, the overall demand of China’s smartphone market points to a strong recovery process.

The Future of Huawei and HarmonyOS

The rapid adoption of the operating system continues to be supported by Huawei’s China-specific applications and services. This enables the operating system to gain an increasingly central place in the Chinese ecosystem. Whether the operating system can maintain its momentum and further reduce Android’s market share in the coming quarters will show what kind of place Huawei will gain in China’s technology ecosystem. Its increasingly larger share of the Chinese market shows that alternative operating systems can challenge the dual monopoly between Android and iOS.

Bootkitty: Linux Users Are Targeted

Security researchers have discovered the first UEFI bootkit designed for Linux systems, dubbed Bootkitty by its creators. This discovery is the first evidence that UEFI boot kits are no longer limited to Windows systems.

An abbreviation for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. UEFIis known as motherboard control software. UEFI is software that is activated when the computer starts, before the operating system starts.

If cybercriminals change the UEFI code, they can use it to deliver malware to the victim’s system. Bootkit It is defined as a type of malware designed to gain low-level control over the computer without the owner’s knowledge.

After a previously unknown application named bootkit.efi was uploaded to VirusTotal in November 2024, Security researchers discovered that it was a UEFI application.

After in-depth analysis, it confirmed that it is a UEFI boot kit called Bootkitty by its creators; surprisingly, it is the first UEFI boot kit to target Linux specifically several Ubuntu versions. The bootkit contains many artifacts that suggest this is more of a proof of concept than the work of a threat actor.

bootkitty

Bootkitty is signed with a self-signed certificate, so it cannot run on systems that have UEFI secure boot enabled by default. But since Bootkitty patches in memory the necessary functions responsible for integrity verification UEFI It is designed to seamlessly boot the Linux kernel whether secure boot is enabled or not.

Bootkit is an advanced rootkit that can replace the boot loader and patch the kernel before it is executed. Bootkitty gives the attacker full control over the affected machine as it hijacks the machine’s boot process and runs the malware before the operating system even starts.

During analysis he discovered a possibly related unsigned kernel module that he called BCDropper, with signs suggesting that it may have been developed by the same authors as Bootkitty. It distributes an ELF binary responsible for loading another kernel module, unknown at the time of analysis.
