Apple is preparing to enable app sideloading on iOS devices to meet antitrust law requirements of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. 9to5MacEvidence found in iOS 17.2 beta code suggests that the company is indeed moving towards enabling sideloading on iOS devices.

What is sideloading?

Sideloading refers to the process of installing applications obtained from third-party sources rather than an official source. In iOS, the official source, that is, the only source of application or game installation available to iPhone and iPad users, is the App Store. Until now, Apple has not allowed sideloading on iOS because it would allow apps to get around App Store rules.

However, the European Union passed the Digital Markets Act (DMA) last year. This new antitrust law is designed to ensure that big tech companies do not undermine competition. One of the requirements of the DMA is that users can install any application they want from third-party sources.

Previous news had revealed that Apple was working behind the scenes on iOS 17 to prepare its system for sideloading in Europe. Internal code revealed with the iOS 17.2 beta shows this to be true.

iOS 17.2 looks set to allow alternative app stores. iOS 17.2 has a new public framework called “Managed App Distribution”. It was originally thought that this API would be related to MDM solutions for installing enterprise applications, which is already possible on iOS. However, it looks like Apple is working on something more important than that.

Evidence of “sideloading” in Apple iOS 17.2 beta

Analyzing the new API, 9to5Mac learned that an extension endpoint was declared in the system. This allows other applications to create such extensions. Digging deeper revealed the existence of a new and untapped authorization that would allow third-party apps to install other apps. In other words, this will allow developers to create their own app stores.

The API includes basic controls for downloading, installing and even updating applications from external sources. It can also check if an app is compatible with a particular device or iOS version, as the App Store already does. However, this could easily be used to modernize MDM solutions.

This API also includes references to a region lock. This suggests that Apple may limit sideloading to certain countries. This wouldn’t make sense for MDM solutions, but it would make sense to enable sideloading only in certain countries when required by authorities, for example in the European Union. Previously, 9to5Mac reported that Apple uses to limit certain iOS features He stated that he had developed a new system.

Apple must comply with the DMA law by March 2024. The company acknowledged in a Form 10-K filing that it expects to make changes that will impact the App Store’s business model.

At the same time, Apple will appeal to the European Union to include the App Store in the Digital Markets Act. Apple will try anything to protect the iOS App Store. But ultimately, iOS 17 will be ready for sideloading.

It has been said that Apple has been working on a microLED screen for a long time and will use this screen on its smart watch. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that microLED and Apple Watch were canceled. Details are in our news…

Ming-Chi Kuo in his new research report Apple’s microLED Apple WatchHe said he canceled and shelved it. According to Kuo, Apple made this decision because microLED does not add significant value to the smart watch and its high production cost.

After Apple’s cancellation decision, many people from the microLED development team were laid off. Currently, there do not appear to be any projects related to microLED. This situation caused a major setback for the Cupertino-based company. As a result, the company wanted to make its products more competitive and go one step ahead of its competitors with new generation display technology. It was also said in old reports that microLED could come to iPhone and iPad after Apple Watch.

Osram was supplying special LED chip for microLED. The cooperation between Apple and Osram was also terminated. This shows that Apple does not have a plan to mass produce microLED on its agenda.

A few days ago, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman announced that after 10 years of work and millions of dollars in development costs, Apple has given up on the electric vehicle business, and the 2000 people working on the car have been shifted to artificial intelligence projects.
